The Department of Environmental Sciences & Natural Resources was created in 1986, as a centre ascribed to the Faculty of Biology of the University of Alicante. First, all areas related to Biology were included in the department. However, since 1993, as a consequence of the natural development of the Faculty, new departments segregated from it (e.g. Dpt. of Environment & Earth Sciences, Dpt. of Ecology, and Dpt. of Marine Sciences & Applied Biology).
Since late 2004, the Department of Environmental Sciences & Natural Resources is conformed in its current structure, grouping people belonging to three areas:
- Plant Physiology
Nowadays, the Department develops teaching activities in several centres of the UA:
- Faculty of Sciences, Degree in Biology.
- Faculty of Law, Degree in Criminology.
- Permanent University, in several formative courses.
- University Venue at Biar, in several formative courses.
The staff of the Department of Environmental Sciences & Natural Resources is arranged in different collectives: Research & Teaching Staff (PDI), Administration & Services Staff (PAS), Granted Students & Collaborators, and Honour Collaborators.
All members of the Research & Teaching Staff of the Department develop activities in four Research Groups, currently ascribed to the University Institute for Biodiversity CIBIO (Latin-American Centre for Biodiversity):
- Biodiversity & Biotechnology applied to Conservation Biology
- Bionomy, Systematics & applied research on Dipterous and Hymenopterous insects
- Botany & Plant Conservation
- Zoology of Vertebrates
Several Granted Students from the University Institute for Biodiversity CIBIO (Latin-American Centre for Biodiversity) also participate in some teaching and research activities of the Department of Environmental Sciences & Natural Resources.
